A frenulum is a little-known part of the body. It is a small piece of tissue that connects one part of your mouth to another. If you or your child has a frenulum that is very short or thick, there may be a problem with speaking clearly or eating properly. The clinical name for this problem is ankyloglossia and it is more commonly known as tongue tie.
The solution to this problem is a treatment by our dentists called a frenectomy. During this procedure the frenulum is removed to allow for better movement or even oral development. For example, in a labial frenectomy the dentist removes the tissue that attaches the upper gums to the lips, which can prevent gum recession or even a gap in the front teeth. Aside from the cosmetic benefits of a labial frenectomy, this can make dentures easier to wear for some patients.
A frenectomy is an out-patient procedure that is done in our office in a single visit. If you or your child need a frenectomy in Woodland Hills, California, our dentists can help.
